Aspen Dental: from 12 to 6K citations in Google AI Overviews

Client
Aspen Dental
Industry
Healthcare · dental care
Market
United States

Starting point

Aspen Dental, a national multi-location dental brand, already ranked well on Google. But when people asked AI assistants about dentists, the brand rarely came up: our first audit found 12 citations in Google AI Overviews (from just 2 pages) and 20 in ChatGPT. The pages were long service lists and location details with no clear questions and answers, so AI tools passed them over.

What we did

We rebuilt the site around the questions people ask AI. We mapped real prompts by city and service, rewrote location and service pages FAQ-first with FAQ schema, made the brand’s facts consistent across the web, and ran a multi-tier backlink campaign on high-authority sites that AI models learn from.

  • Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
  • Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
  • FAQ-first page rewrites
  • FAQ schema markup
  • Entity verification
  • Multi-tier backlink campaign
  • AI citation tracking

How we did it

  1. Audit the AI gap

We measured how often Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot cited aspendental.com. The first audit in Ahrefs found 12 AI Overview citations from 2 pages, 20 in ChatGPT, 33 in Perplexity, 30 in Gemini and 2 in Copilot.

  2. Map the questions people ask AI

With Semrush AI prompts we collected the real questions people ask about the brand, by city and by service (for example, which services Aspen Dental offers in Searcy, Cabot and Russellville), and turned the most valuable ones into a content plan.

  3. Rebuild the pages FAQ-first

Location and service pages now open with direct answers to common patient questions, backed by FAQ schema. Instead of a list of services, AI finds a clear answer it can quote and a page it can cite.

  4. Verify the entity

We made the brand’s facts about its locations and services consistent and checkable across the web, so AI models treat Aspen Dental as one trusted entity.

  5. Build authority where AI looks

A multi-tier backlink campaign on high-authority sites that AI models learn from, so the brand is cited across ChatGPT, Google AI and Gemini, not just one tool.

  6. Measure citations and clicks

We tracked AI citations in Ahrefs, AI visibility in Semrush and clicks in Google Search Console, and reported the before and after for every platform.

  1. Page 1 of 7

    Cover

The headline results of the project: Google AI Overview citations grew from 12 to 6K, ChatGPT citations from 20 to 623, and the number of pages Google’s AI cites went from 2 to 306. It also states the goal we agreed with the client: turn a website that relied on classic search into a brand that AI assistants trust and quote.

  2. Page 2 of 7

    Where we started

Our first audit in Ahrefs: 12 AI Overview citations, 20 in ChatGPT, 33 in Perplexity, 30 in Gemini and 2 in Copilot. Aspen Dental ranked well on Google, but its pages were service lists and location details without clear questions and answers, so AI tools didn’t quote them. The original Ahrefs screenshot is included as proof.

  3. Page 3 of 7

    What we did

How we rebuilt the site around the questions people ask AI: we mapped real prompts by city and service in Semrush, rewrote location and service pages FAQ-first with FAQ schema, and ran a multi-tier backlink campaign on high-authority sites. The examples on the right are real prompts about Aspen Dental offices in Arkansas, with the answers Gemini and Google AI now give.

  4. Page 4 of 7

    AI citations before and after

A platform-by-platform comparison of the first audit with April 2026, from Ahrefs Site Explorer. AI Overview citations grew about 500 times (12 to 6K), ChatGPT 31 times, Perplexity 15 times, Gemini 12 times and Copilot 40 times. The chart uses a log scale so the smaller platforms stay readable.

  5. Page 5 of 7

    AI visibility today

Semrush AI Visibility for 24–25 April 2026: a score of 67 out of 100, 32.4K citations, 17.8K mentions and 8.9K cited pages. It breaks mentions down by AI platform and by country, with 97.2% from the US, the market where patients can actually book.

  6. Page 6 of 7

    Search performance

Classic Google search stayed strong while we worked on AI visibility: the Search Console figures for about three weeks of April 2026 sit next to authority readings from Ahrefs (DR 68) and Semrush (Authority Score 58), with a note that each tool estimates traffic its own way.

  7. Page 7 of 7

    Why it works

The method behind the results, which we repeat for other brands: entity verification (consistent, checkable facts about the brand, its locations and services) and a content architecture built around real questions with direct answers and schema. It ends with our four steps: audit the AI gap, rebuild around questions, scale authority and AI reach, and measure citations and clicks.

Case study 4 of 7

Vograce: #1 on Google US for every top product keyword

Client
Vograce
Industry
E-commerce · custom merchandise
Market
United States, plus UK link building
Project cost
$18,300 · 10 orders

Starting point

Vograce makes custom keychains, pins, plushies, body pillows and more for creators, artists, anime fans and brands. Searches like “custom pins” and “custom keychains” are some of the most contested in e-commerce, with many print-on-demand stores chasing them. Vograce needed its collection pages to win those searches, not just its brand name.

What we did

We built authority from many real sources and pointed it at the pages that sell: guest posts and outreach guest posts on established sites, tiered backlinks behind every placement, local SEO with UK link building, and AI visibility work so AI search tools understand what Vograce makes.

  • Guest posts
  • Outreach guest posts
  • Tiered backlinks
  • Local SEO
  • UK link building
  • AI visibility (GEO)

How we did it

  1. Match keywords to the pages that sell

Ahrefs showed which “custom” product searches bring buyers: custom keychains (12K searches a month), custom pins (8.2K), custom plushies (3.9K) and custom body pillow (3.6K). We matched each one to the collection or product page that should rank for it.

  2. Guest posts

Articles on relevant, established websites with natural links to Vograce’s collection pages.

  3. Outreach guest posts

Manual outreach to real site owners and bloggers to earn placements on sites with genuine audiences, not link farms.

  4. Tiered backlinks

Supporting links that strengthen each guest post, outreach post and UK link, so more authority flows to the pages that convert.

  5. Local SEO and UK link building

UK-focused links and local signals to grow Vograce’s visibility with UK shoppers, alongside its US core market.

  6. AI visibility

Clear, consistent brand and product information so AI search tools understand what Vograce makes and recommend it. Its AI visibility score is now 70+.

Inside the case study

5 pages from the report, with what each one shows. Select a page to see it full size.

  1. Page 1 of 5

    Cover

The headline results: 59.8K organic visits a month, $32.8K of monthly traffic value, all 5 top keywords at #1 on Google US, and an AI visibility score of 70+. The goal was to put Vograce’s collection pages, not just its brand name, at the top for high-volume “custom” product searches.

  2. Page 2 of 5

    The client and the challenge

Who Vograce is, what it makes and who buys from it, and why the project was hard: “custom pins” and “custom keychains” are contested by many print-on-demand stores. It also sets out our four-part brief and the project figures: 10 orders, $18,300 in total, $1,830 per order on average.

  3. Page 3 of 5

    What we did

Our five workstreams: guest posts, outreach guest posts, tiered backlinks, local SEO with UK link building, and AI visibility. The diagram shows how they fit together: tier 2 links strengthen each guest post, outreach post and UK link, and all of them pass authority to the collection pages that now rank #1.

  4. Page 4 of 5

    Rankings

Proof of the rankings: the Ahrefs screenshot shows Vograce at position 1 on Google US for “custom keychains” (12K searches a month), “vograce”, “custom pins” (8.2K), “custom plushies” and “custom body pillow”. The band at the bottom shows which pages bring the visitors, led by the homepage and the custom pins collection.

  5. Page 5 of 5

    Traffic and return on investment

The Ahrefs traffic chart rising from about 39K visits in May to 59.8K in October 2026, with 79% of visitors in the US. It compares the whole project cost ($18,300) with the monthly traffic value ($32,800): one month of organic traffic is worth about 1.8 times what the client paid.

Case study 5 of 7

Brooklinen: a well-known brand that AI tools now cite

Client
Brooklinen
Industry
E-commerce · bedding and home
Market
United States

Starting point

Brooklinen, a direct-to-consumer bedding and home brand, had strong brand recognition. But our first audit found only 6 citations in Google AI Overviews and 1 in ChatGPT. Its content was written for classic search with no clear answer structure, so AI couldn’t verify the brand’s claims or connect them to product questions.

What we did

We replaced broad keywords with an entity-first strategy: we mapped what shoppers ask, added Product and FAQPage schema with clear facts about materials and thread counts, and built topic clusters across the full buying journey.

  • Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
  • Shopper question mapping
  • Product schema
  • FAQPage schema
  • Topic clusters
  • AI citation tracking

How we did it

  1. Audit the AI gap

The first Ahrefs audit found 6 AI Overview citations, 1 in ChatGPT, 1 in Perplexity, 4 in Gemini and 9 in Copilot.

  2. Map what shoppers ask

We analysed high-volume topics like “breathable sheets” and “best cooling bedding” to find the exact prompts that drive buying decisions in home goods.

  3. Add Product and FAQPage schema

Machine-readable facts about materials, thread counts and customer satisfaction, so AI can confidently cite Brooklinen as the source.

  4. Cover the whole buying journey

Topic clusters that take shoppers from “What’s the best material?” to “Where can I buy it?”, plus brand questions like “is Brooklinen worth it” and category terms like “best cooling sheets”.

  5. Track citations by platform

AI citations in Ahrefs and AI visibility in Semrush, compared with the first audit for every platform.

The project at a glance: Google AI Overview citations up from 6 to 168, ChatGPT from 1 to 53, Perplexity from 1 to 103 and Copilot from 9 to 389. The goal was to move a bedding brand from depending on classic search to being a source AI tools cite when shoppers ask about bedding.

  2. Page 2 of 5

    Where we started

The first Ahrefs audit: 6 AI Overview citations, 1 in ChatGPT, 1 in Perplexity, 4 in Gemini and 9 in Copilot. Brooklinen was a well-known brand, but its content had no clear answer structure, so AI couldn’t verify its claims or connect them to product questions. The original Ahrefs screenshot is included.

    AI citations before and after

Before-and-after AI citations by platform from Ahrefs, April 2026: Copilot 9 to 389, Perplexity 1 to 103, ChatGPT 1 to 53, AI Overview 6 to 168 and Gemini 4 to 42. Pages cited by ChatGPT grew from 1 to 90 and by Copilot from 4 to 248.

  5. Page 5 of 5

Visibility today and why it works

Semrush AI Visibility on 24–25 April 2026: a score of 40, 14.7K mentions, 1K citations and 505 cited pages, with authority readings from Ahrefs (DR 74) and Semrush. It closes with why the approach works: content AI can read, verify and trust is what earns the citation.

Case study 6 of 7

Houst: #1 on Google UK for “airbnb management”

Client
Houst
Industry
Real estate · Airbnb and short-let management
Market
United Kingdom
Project cost
$3,674 · 11 orders

Starting point

Houst manages Airbnb and short-term rental homes for homeowners, landlords and investors. “Airbnb management” is a high-value local service search: owners compare a few companies on page one and contact one of them. Houst needed to rank first for the service and for city searches like “airbnb management london”, against many local agencies chasing the same owners.

What we did

We combined local SEO for a UK business with guest posts and outreach link building on real websites, and pointed the links and local signals at the service and city pages that win owners.

  • Local SEO
  • Guest posts
  • Outreach link building
  • Service and city page targeting

How we did it

  1. Pick the searches that win owners

“airbnb management” (1.2K searches a month in the UK), “airbnb management companies”, “airbnb management london” and “air bnb management”: the searches owners use when they choose a manager.

  2. Local SEO for a UK business

UK-focused local SEO so Google sees Houst as a relevant manager in the cities it serves, starting with London.

  3. Guest posts

Articles on relevant, established websites with natural links to Houst’s service and city pages.

  4. Outreach link building

Manual outreach to real site owners and editors to earn links from websites with genuine audiences.

  5. Focus on the pages that win owners

Links and local signals aimed at the homepage, the London management page and city pages like Dublin.

Inside the case study

5 pages from the report, with what each one shows. Select a page to see it full size.

  1. Page 1 of 5

    Cover

Houst ranks #1 on Google UK for “airbnb management” (1.2K searches a month) and “airbnb management london”. Traffic peaked at about 16K visits a month in September 2026, and the monthly traffic value of $24.3K is 6.6 times the whole project cost of $3,674 over 11 orders.

  2. Page 2 of 5

    The client and the challenge

Who Houst is, what it does for property owners, and where it works: London, more UK cities, Ireland and abroad. The challenge: owners compare a few managers on page one and contact one of them. It lists our three-part brief and the project figures: 11 orders, $3,674 in total, $334 per order.

  3. Page 3 of 5

    What we did

Four steps: local SEO for a UK business starting with London, guest posts, outreach link building, and pointing links and local signals at the pages that win owners. The diagram shows how links and UK local signals build Houst’s authority, which now ranks #1 for all five top keywords.

  4. Page 4 of 5

    Rankings

The Ahrefs screenshot confirms position 1 on Google UK for “houst”, “airbnb management”, “airbnb management companies”, “airbnb management london” and “air bnb management”. The band underneath shows which pages earn UK visitors, including the London management page and the Dublin Airbnb business page.

  5. Page 5 of 5

    Traffic and return on investment

The Ahrefs traffic chart from May to October 2026: from about 10K to a peak of about 16K in September, then 13K in October. The bar comparison sets the project cost ($3,674) against the monthly traffic value ($24,300), so one month of traffic is worth about 6.6 times what the client paid.

Case study 7 of 7

CADMAP: #1 for the searches that win survey work

Client
CADMAP
Industry
Construction · land and building surveying
Market
United Kingdom
Project cost
$11,836 · 22 orders

Starting point

CADMAP is a TSA-approved land and building surveying practice with offices in London, Surrey, Brighton and Southampton. Survey work is won locally: buyers search for a service, a place or a price, such as “topographical survey london” or “gpr survey cost”, then contact one of the first few results. CADMAP needed its service pages in those top spots, with enough authority to stay there.

What we did

We built authority first and pointed it at the pages that sell: guest posts linking to CADMAP’s service pages, a second tier of supporting links behind each one, local off-page SEO for its service areas, and AI visibility work. The same playbook has since ranked 6 more websites.

  • Guest posts
  • Tiered backlinks
  • Local off-page SEO
  • AI visibility
  • SEO for 6 more websites

How we did it

  1. Target the searches that bring jobs

Service, place and price searches such as “topographical survey london” and “gpr survey cost”, plus the brand name, matched to CADMAP’s service and pricing pages.

  2. Guest posts

Articles on relevant, established websites with natural links to CADMAP’s service pages, building authority around surveying and construction.

  3. Tiered backlinks

A second tier of supporting links behind each guest post, pointing at the guest posts rather than at CADMAP, so each tier 1 link carries more weight.

  4. Local off-page SEO

Off-page work focused on the areas CADMAP serves (London, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire), so it ranks for searches that pair a service with a place.

  5. AI visibility

Clear, consistent information about CADMAP’s services, prices and coverage, so AI search tools can understand and recommend the business.

  6. Repeat the playbook

The same approach has since ranked 6 more websites.

Inside the case study

5 pages from the report, with what each one shows. Select a page to see it full size.

  1. Page 1 of 5

    Cover

CADMAP, a UK land and building surveyor, ranks #1 on Google UK for “topographical survey london” and “gpr survey cost”. The client reports $2M in sales over the last 12 months, and the same SEO playbook has ranked 6 more websites.

  2. Page 2 of 5

    The client and the challenge

Who CADMAP is (a TSA-approved surveying practice with offices in London, Surrey, Brighton and Southampton), what it offers, and who it needs to reach: architects, planners, developers and designers. The challenge: survey work is won locally, and buyers contact one of the first few results.

  3. Page 3 of 5

    What we did

Guest posts, tiered backlinks, local off-page SEO and AI visibility. The diagram explains the tiered link structure: guest posts on relevant sites link to CADMAP’s service and pricing pages, and tier 2 supporting links point to those guest posts so each one carries more weight.

  4. Page 4 of 5

    Rankings

The Ahrefs screenshot shows 4 of CADMAP’s top 5 UK keywords at position 1, including the buying-intent searches “topographical survey london” and “gpr survey cost”, plus the brand name. We explain why they matter: someone asking for a survey price or a London surveyor is close to booking.

  5. Page 5 of 5

    Traffic, impact and what’s next

About 400 organic visits a month (Ahrefs), 74% from the UK, worth about $1.1K a month in ad value, and 4 of the top 5 pages are service or pricing pages. The client reports $2M in sales over the last 12 months, and the next phase is social media marketing.
