GEO vs SEO: how to get your brand cited in AI answers

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity answer questions directly and link to a handful of sources. Being one of those sources is what Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about. It sounds new, but most of it is good SEO done with more discipline.

How GEO differs from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO aims for a high position in a list of ten links. GEO aims to be quoted inside an answer. That changes what matters most: a page has to be easy to understand in isolation, clearly attributable to a trustworthy source, and specific enough to be worth quoting.

Google has said there is no special markup or file you need to appear in AI Overviews; the same fundamentals that help a page rank help it be shown there. So GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is a layer on top of it.

Seven steps that make a page easier to cite

1. Answer first

Open each section with one or two plain sentences that answer the question in its heading. Put the detail, caveats and examples after it.

2. One question per section

Use headings that match how people ask: “How long does a technical SEO audit take?” A clean structure helps both readers and machines find the right passage.

3. A consistent identity everywhere

Use the same brand name, description, founder name and contact details on your website, LinkedIn, business directories and marketplace profiles. Inconsistent details make it harder to connect the dots about who you are.

4. Structured data that matches the page

Mark up what is visible: Organization, Person, Product, FAQ or Article. Do not add markup for content that is not on the page.

5. Something original

Your own numbers, process, screenshots or examples give an AI system a reason to cite you rather than a dozen similar pages.

6. Real freshness

Update pages when facts change and show an honest “last updated” date. Changing the date without changing the content does not help anyone.

7. Mentions on sites people trust

Relevant publications, directories and communities that mention your brand help establish it as an entity worth referencing.

How to track progress

There is no single GEO dashboard yet. A simple routine works: list the 20 to 30 questions your customers ask, check monthly how AI tools answer them, and note when and where your brand appears. Watch referral traffic from AI platforms in Google Analytics 4 alongside your usual Search Console data.

The short version

Be the clearest, most specific and most consistent source on your topic. That has always been good SEO; AI search just rewards it more visibly.
